November 13 – Perfection

Never had repentance been sweeter than she found it to be there, alone in a hospital room, with her Beloved.

She was keenly aware of all those for whom she had prayed, but without a depth of compassion, and all those with whom she had shared a message of faith, but without a fervent willingness to share their weakness. The words of the Apostle Paul became more meaningful than ever, and she gave herself to become weak for the sake of others.

To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the Gospel, that I may share in its blessings. (1 Corinthians 9:22)

She asked her questions. “Does weak mean ‘sick’? No greater surrender has ever been known than Jesus’, who left His power and place and glory to take on human flesh, but He wasn’t sick or debilitated . . . and He healed those who were.” This she knew, that no greater “weakness,” could ever be known than to subdue and crucify the power of the flesh and to live as Jesus lived . . . He did ONLY what He saw the Father doing.

How the Abbess rejoiced to know that she would always have health enough to fulfill the same purpose, for that is our purpose in Christ! “Be perfect,” said He, “as I am perfect,” and His perfection was obedience from a joyful heart. Ours is to be formed in that image.

Room 203 vibrated with the joy and the knowledge that she would never be too sick or debilitated to be perfect as Jesus Christ is perfect.
