April 16 – Convent Living

“Beach-front” . . . “luxury downtown” . . . “country charm” . . . hot properties are hot topics in our time.

What we have not seen lately is the property listing: “Convent living at its best!”

The advertisement would have to read something like this: “Enjoy the convenience of concierge service in your personal cell . . . habits delivered fresh to your door as needed.”

“Imagine life in unsurpassed quiet and serenity. Only two conversational opportunities each day! Savor hours of time to collect your thoughts . . . day after day . . . decade upon decade.”

“The epitome of grace-full living! Unsurpassed opportunities to lay down those ungodly attitudes and worldly aspirations! Come to the vocation . . . the vows . . . the confines of life in the Abbey!”

How does one promote the disciplines and the rigors, the devotion and the rewards of monastic life, when the monastery is that of the heart? For us in Cor Unum, it’s a banner headline:

“Join us as we press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus has taken hold of us!” (reference, Philippians 3:12)
