December 5 – What Better Time?

What better time than Christmas to overcome our innate desire to be desirable and put into effect our will to worship?

Christmas is about the other fellow. It’s all about how to surprise and bless and not about how to gain and impress. As we’ve mentioned, the background music in shopping malls and grocery stores is about mangers and shepherds and nights made holy by the birth of a long-expected babe.

Now that’s an interesting consideration. Many of the religions of earth center around an intellectual or marshal deliverer, but few if any of them revolve around the appearance of a long anticipated Messiah, promised, awaited, arriving on target, recognized in the heavens . . . and with a new star, no less.

As we make our cloistered, conventual Christmas considerations, has the star, as it were, arisen in the East? If the Magi could follow a star to find a King, we can set out in a determined course in honor of that same King, our Lord and Savior, not to mention our hope of glory! They sought to discover Him; He has discovered us, and drawn us with cords of love. (Jeremiah 31:3, Hosea 11:4)

Every day this season, in keeping with all we have seen and practiced and desired throughout this year, let us set before our eyes a course, a lodestar, of worship, that not one Advent day will flow away without our having worshiped that King and Lord, whose name we know, whose Spirit has come to comfort and guide us in every season.

  1. So true!

I really like the way you said, "Christmas is about the other fellow." It is... but then, so is life. If people would focus more on others than themselves it would put an end to many of the problems we see in the world today.
